Established in 2008, World Rare Disease Day is celebrated every year on the last day of February. Aimed at raising awareness of the pressing issue of rare diseases and their impact on us all - individual, family and society - it is a day celebrated in over 80 countries. It is important to mention EURORDIS-Rare Diseases Europe as it is this non-profit, non-governmental alliance that created this initiative. Combining more than 700 rare disease patient organisations from over 60 countries, they work together to improve the lives of the 30 million rare disease patients in Europe.
