SRS Advogados advises Portuguese company JP Inspiring Knowledge (JP-IK), the manufacturer of Magalhães laptops, in relation to contracts (with a value of €150 million) for the supply of laptop computers for students and teachers, equipping 13,000 Kenyan schools.
JP-IK was advised by a team from the SRS Advogados' Corporate Department lead by Partner Nuno Miguel Prata. The team also included Partner Paulo Bandeira and Senior Lawyer Francisco Martins Caetano.
"This operation represented an interesting challenge, not only due to the volume, complexity and competition from the leading global IT companies, but also from a legal standpoint. In addition to advising throughout the various phases of the tender, the team advised on the joint venture with Moi University, as well as the installation of a computer assembly factory and its engineering service centre, which will be located on one of the MOI University campuses stated Nuno Miguel Prata.
JP-IK applied for the tender in Kenya in 2015, in partnership with Moi University, and emerged as the overall winner of two of the three lots included in the public tender. Up to the end of March 2017 the Portuguese corporation will supply and install 695,000 computers for students and teachers in 13,000 schools, as well as other apparatus including servers and Braille printers. Additionally, the Moi University/JP-IK partnership will provide technical training to around 33,000 teachers.
