Nuno Calaim Lourenço, Associate Manager at SRS Advogados and Maria Barros Silva, Associate at SRS Advogados, are co-authors of an academic article in UNIO - EU LAW Journal, published by the Universidade do Minho, in Portugal.
The article, entitled REPOWER EU - A challenge and an opportunity, reflects on the theme of Energy in the European Union, so pertinent and in the media in these times. It can be read here.
About the article, Nuno Calaim Lourenço and Maria Barros Silva state:
"We address the topic of Energy and, in particular, the RePowerEU initiative, recently presented by the European Commission, in which energy transition is identified as the main driver of the European response to the crisis caused by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia.
The topic is framed within the broader discussion on the global energy crisis, which chronologically precedes the event of the armed conflict, taking the opportunity to identify solutions that we believe can mitigate the effects of the current situation and, essentially, prevent future new paradoxes arising from the still very substantial EU dependence on fossil fuels.
Finally, we highlight the very relevant and strategic role that, in this context, Portugal may come to assume at the European level. Not only in the logic of transhipment of North American gas to northern Europe, but also as a leader in renewables that are expected to be drained through new and strengthened interconnections with France. The possibilities in terms of energy in Portugal seem promising, with a gradual inflection expected in terms of the country's geopolitical importance."'
